The priest felt that the voice was trying to change the subject, to provoke a debate so that it wouldn’t have to reveal the content of the hidden story. He couldn’t tell if the speaker was genuinely afraid of the consequences or if it was all just a ploy to tantalize and frighten him. Both explanations seemed equally plausible. He decided to put an end to it, and said:
“My son, if I am to attempt to help you, I must first hear the story which has so upset you. Let me offer some words of reassurance:
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.
Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Neither give place to the devil.
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice:
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
Do you understand, my son? It is God’s Will that we speak of all things evil and unholy. For, if we do not speak of them, we leave them in darkness to fester and grow strong. If, however, we throw open the shutters and let the Pure Light of God shine upon them, then they shall be withered and blasted, and we shall see that they were not more than dust and shadows. They can have no power over us when we discuss them openly and without fear.”
